  • will my OM617 power a Toyota T100

I have a '94 Toyota T100 that I am interested in converting to diesel. I currently have a '79 mercedes 300sd turbo diesel, best I can tell this is the OM617. I am considering putting the mercedes engine into the Toyota. I am a little concerned about being underpowered with this setup though. I am not a four wheeler or rock crawler, I use this truck for work, hauling stuff around. I also have a clasic rainbow camp trailer that I would like to be able to pull. The current v6 does all right pulling it but I definetly have to gear down climbing hills and I seem to be using up the clutch kinda fast. So just wondering how the om617 would work, is there ways to modify the power, and/or what are other possible accesable options. I would like to use something I already have (hence the mercedes interest) or can easily find in farm country. Also to consider is I have very little mechanick experience, though I am a solid, steady (if at times slow) learner.

Well. I don't know much about mercedes engines, but on the wiki there are quite a few different ones:

I would say you want to get close to the KZ engine power (at least), especially for towing. I even expected a bit more power from my kz conversion, but getting used to it...( for a while i was looking at newer BMW engines too.)
And for tune ups, probably you won't find to much on this forum, but take a look here: http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/thread-1505.html

thanks, looks like the 300sd will be underpowered for what I want. is the KZ engine the toyota diesel engine? this might be a good solution for me, I am thinking it will be an easier conversion. is it likely to find one of these in the states and what can I expect to pay for it?
