That is a very interesting pdf. Definitely worth having a look at. Makes you think twice about the fuel quality here.

Nope, haven't been to Hueco yet - it's on the list though. I'm building a climbing wall in Fort Hood, TX, right now, so hopefully while I'm in this region of the country I'll find a window to shoot over there. In general I aim for the bigger stuff though - roped climbing - bouldering (Hueco mostly) is cool, but haven't been into it as much the last few years.
Will take a look at that PDF for sure - thanks Spruce |

Building wall? For who? Nicros? Eldo? I may know someone that knows you if it's one of the major commerical companies.
While Hueco certainly isn't known for it, the sport climbing there is actually damn good, especially now that the coalition is being allowed to rebolt the older stuff. I think that says more about the quality and quantity of the bouldering than it does the ropes though. The Hueco Rock Ranch has plenty of info on where the roped climbing is.. Plus the place itself is simply amazing. This was on the way out of the park a few years ago: ![]() Round Room: ![]() More http://www.flickr.com/photos/justin_...7609584187180/ |

GAS STATION????
The only place I fuel is at a truck stop. BIG name truck stop: * Pilot, over 300 locations USA only (they recently bought out Flying J) * Flying J, all over the USA and significantly in Canadia (mostly West and Central) * T/A, USA only (very heavy coverage in the Eastern US) * Petro, this is a smaller "big chain", USA only I exclusively use a major truck stop for all the reasons bloc mentioned-- microbes, water accumulation, winter diesel blending, crappy underground tanks, overpricing as Mom&Pop try to squeeze every penny-- all avoided or REALLY diminished with a high-volume major name. ALWAYS PLAN AHEAD. Heck, you know where you're going, so it's easy to locate an entire chain of truck stops along your way. Top off before you hit a long stretch. This is just basic common sense. If it turns out that, sadly, your mama raised an idiot and you fuel up at some one-horse joint, limp along until you reach the next big truck stop and get some clean fuel in there. Then change the filter (you DO have a spare with you, of course??). If I were in Canadia I'd probably go with a Flying J before a Husky-- the latter has a truly stupid website that is hard to find and hard to navigate. If they can't pay some pimply-face kid to put together a truly decent website, I'm a lot less interested in stopping there. Just my opinion. A rebuilt injection pump with all Viton seals is going to be darned hard to find. You will have to put together a custom seal kit from individual seals you bought yourself. Modern seal kits have SOME Viton, where appropriate, and SOME non-Viton, where appropriate. Field results have proven Viton is NOT the ideal seal material for certain applications within the IP and will fail sooner. To answer your question Spruce, a brand-new/rebuilt IP will handle ULSD just fine as long as it's the ONLY fuel it ever sees. That said, I think just about everybody here is running some kind of lubricity additive just to be on the safe side; from Howes to Marvel Mystery Oil to BioDiesel in small amounts. --Radio

Bloc - I work for Eldo. I'm pretty sure we have a mutual friend - in fact I think he's working with me on this job. Chris M? When he saw my truck he mentioned he had a friend who recently finished a conversion, I think from Houston, and I'm guessing that's you. From his description it sounds like a nice ride.
I've heard Hueco's got some decent sport, although if I swing through I want to mostly hit the bouldering - that's definitely what the place is famous for. It's on the must-hit list, but I've got other destinations that are a lot higher priority (like getting back to the Valley), so I probably won't go until I'm passing through that part of Texas anyway (which might happen mid to late March it's looking like). I sure hope that happens. Radio - Mama didn't raise the brightest boy, I guess, cause I have certainly filled up at some smaller stations, although I try to avoid it. The whole planning thing,,, is something I'm working on. I should try to dig up a set of maps with major truck stops printed, and just have them in my vehicle - my life is pretty spontaneous, and even when I do make plans, they change a lot - like, one day I was finishing a job in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and the next day was going to Red River Gorge, Kentucky, when up popped a wall to be built in College Station, Texas, so with about 4 hours notice, my plans for which region of the country I'd be in were completely changed. And since I was in the area, instead of going back East, I ended up randomly shooting through Mexico, to Longview, to Stephenville, to Fort Hood,,,, and next I'm supposedly going to Dallas, to Toronto... maybe. You get the idea. But, I gotta plan better - do NOT want to hurt my truck. Thanks for the info about the pump - I know it was rebuilt just prior to me buying the truck, by a reputable shop - I have the receipt, and the PO told me it was Viton seals so everything is Biodiesel compatible, but I've yet to call the shop to find out exactly what they did. One of these days... Spruce |
