1. Actually that's backwards; this time of year what you will commonly find is #1 diesel, the "winter" fuel. By the nature of the formulation, it is also extremely common for #1 diesel to yield less fuel mileage than if you were burning #2.
2. I don't find it surprising that fuel places would not offer you a choice. Normally all they pump is #1 diesel during certain months and all they pump is #2 diesel during the remaining months. Consumers don't get a choice. Also, consider, if you'd get fantastic results running #2 diesel year round, what need would there be for #1 diesel. That may tell you something.
