Default Throttle shaft slop on 2LT injection pump

Hi all,

We recently removed the injection pump off of our engine to have it tested (for peace of mind). We were led to believe that the truck ran fine before the head cracked on it, so there is possibly nothing wrong with the pump. We took the pump to Regina Diesel Services, they seem to be a bunch of nice guys there, quite helpful indeed. The cost for checking the pump was supposed to be around $225 (+$75 to rebuild one of our injectors that had tip leakage). We went back in on Monday and they had taken an initial look at the pump and noticed that the throttle shaft was worn in the housing. The guy working there said that this would cause a lack of pressure in the pump resulting in hard starts if it was left for a few days. This sort of falls in line with the story that we were told by one of the former owners. He said that he had to install an electric lift pump by the tank because if it sat for 5-6 days it didn't want to start.

Here's my question; have any of you disasembled one of these pumps? The shop estimated that it would probably cost us about $1500 for them to machine the pump housing and fit a bushing and then test the pump. This still is no guarantee that the pump even works, so it is a pretty risky move. I'm not scared to pull stuff apart, and have successfully pulled a Deutz Bosch pump apart one time when I was bored. As long as there are no settings that have to be redone when I take it apart, I'd rather take it to a machine shop myself and then bring it back for testing. Of course a really simple solution to this whole thing would be if one of you folks had a really nice 2LT pump sitting in your garage :-) If you gave me $500 + the pump, I'd give you a really nice white Toy 4x4 truck box with a pretty brown strip running down the middle and a few "speed holes" :-) I'm kidding, but I seriously have diesel Landcruiser parts to trade.....

Cheers!
Tyler
